An interview with Richard Cullen

What did you do before you were a coach?

My first step to becoming a Coach happened quite by accident, standing on the sidelines watching my 6 year old son learn to play rugby, the Coach needed help organising a large group of mixed ability kids so I started helping. I was learning a coaching style of management in a large multi-national and how to build a team and something just started clicking this is what I am meant to do.

Why did you become an ActionCOACH?

When ActionCOACH first approached me about becoming a Business Coach, I dismissed the idea. I was looking for an opportunity to build my own business or work for myself and move away from progressing up the Corporate Ladder. At first I did not think that Business Coaching would be something that could replace a Corporate salary but the more I investigated and understood the whole philosophy and systems behind ActionCOACH I was hooked and knew this was the right next step for me. I had experience of how small and medium size businesses can fail and the impact that it has on the owner and their families and employees and I knew that my experience and interests could benefit them.

3 most important things in a successful business?

Top 5 Business Books?

There is nothing more important in building a successful business than having a loyal and passionate team, a business model that makes financial sense and having the right support, help and training to keep persisting until the desired result is achieved.

With 6 shelves of business and motivation books I am never short of new ideas and new impetus to keep striving forward. I have been inspired by many writers and examples, 5 of my favourites are:

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Keys to the Vault by Brian Cunningham

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Talent is Never Enough by John Maxwell

Why should a business work with you?

Why attend events?

When I have asked Bevin why she has used me as her Coach for 10 years it comes down to 3 key points:

1. Staying focused to work ON the business and not get lost working IN the business.

2. Having someone who has my back, encourages, supports me and builds my confidence.

3. Access to tools and systems and training for me and my team so we can get to where we want to faster with less expensive mistakes.

Get your journey started in being Coached and to seeing the benefits of having a Coach work with you and your team by attending one of our regular events.
